5 Reasons You Should Take Phytosterols with Globe Artichoke to Lower Your Cholesterol

Do you have a cholesterol reading of higher than 5.5mmol/litre? Do you have or is there heart disease in the family? Are your LDL (bad cholesterol) levels higher than the HDL (good cholesterol)? Are you on cholesterol lowering drugs?

If you have said yes to any of these questions then it is important to keep your cholesterol under control as it is a major risk factor for heart disease. The important criteria for cholesterol other than the total reading is the split between the good and bad cholesterol. The bad cholesterol – low density lipoproteins (LDL) are the ones that can be deposited, when oxidised, into the blood vessels causing plaques which in turn may clog arteries and lead to a condition known as atherosclerosis and a higher risk of heart disease. Whilst the good cholesterol – high density lipoproteins (HDL) help to remove excess cholesterol from the blood stream and take it to the liver to be excreted from the body. But remember it is not only from the diet that bad cholesterol is found but the liver itself can also produce bad cholesterol as well as excrete cholesterol.

There is now a new formula on the market that is targeted at reducing your LDL cholesterol levels. It contains a plant phytosterol compound that has been up till now only available in very low levels in margarine products. It also contains the herb globe artichoke.

Five reasons to take a phytosterol formula:

  1. study in The Journal of American Medical Assoc (JAMA) showed that plant sterols can lower cholesterol as effectively as statin drugs
  2. by avoiding margarine products you are not exposing yourself to unnecessary intake of trans fatty acids (linked to heart disease)
  3. phytosterols are able to block absorption of dietary cholesterol, reducing LDL cholesterol levels by up to 24% over a period of 4-8 weeks
  4. study showed that globe artichoke in a high enough dose will inhibit the bodies own production of LDL’s
  5. globe artichoke also repairs and regenerates the liver like St Mary’s Thistle and helps to lower total serum levels of cholesterol

So why continue to play dice with your cholesterol levels when one tablet a day of the strongest phytosterol formula on the market could make all the difference to your long term health.  We at Go Vita Nowra recommend a minimum dose of 3g of globe artichoke a day with your phytosterols for best results.
