7 reasons why everyone should take Turmeric

Suffering pain and inflammation from osteoarthritis? Ever had glandular fever? History of Alzheimer’s in the family? Do you have high cholesterol and your liver need some support?

If you have said yes to any of the above questions then your body is ready for a little help.  Inflammation is the greatest problem we face today in modern society. Due to many dietary, allergy and infection reasons, our bodies are creating free radicals and inflammatory cytokines faster than our bodies can clear them. This leads to inflammation, pain and disability in the body. Standard treatment is to then take anti-inflammatories and painkillers for the rest of your life, which leads to some unpleasant side effects and usually a worsening of the situation.

Once again the plant world has a solution, Turmeric is a relative of the ginger plant and contains many active constituents but the most researched is curcumin (a curcuminoid). Curcumin is a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, liver tonic and so the list goes on. It has been extensively researched and should be a part of everybody’s daily supplementation.

Seven researched reasons to take Turmeric with high standardised dose curcumin

  1. a study in 1986 showed curcumin is as effective at reducing inflammation as NSAID’s (non steroidal anti-inflammatories) without the side effects
  2. potent stimulator/modulator of the immune system
  3. inhibits Epstein Barr Virus (glandular fever) reactivation
  4. enhances function of liver and may help lower cholesterol
  5. alleviate IBS (by inhibiting inflammation)
  6. may help prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease by counteracting the toxic effects of amyloid-beta protein (plaque in brain)
  7. prevents cataracts

I personally find Turmeric extremely effective for pain relief. Couple of years ago I broke my big toe and took large amounts of Turmeric (no side effects) to reduce pain and inflammation. I required no other painkillers or anti-inflammatories to get on with walking!

Turmeric comes as capsules and we at Go Vita Nowra recommend everyone take a minimum daily dose of 600mg curcumin. If you have any specific ailments which will require higher amounts of Turmeric please don’t hesitate to drop in and ask our qualified Naturopaths in store for your correct dose.
